BUGS AND INSECTS MEASURING CARDS (COLOR 10/B&W 10)
These measuring cards make for a fantastic measurement (nonstandard) learning tool. We use Unifix Cubes, but any small manipulative such as pom poms, vase gems or mini erasers will work.
Children will work to see how many cubes long the bugs and insects are. Students may use the included Bugs and Insects Measure and Record worksheet to record their measurements. Discuss which are shorter and which are longer, and which are the same length. So many learning concepts here!
The included worm and snail measuring cards are optional. While the snail and worm are neither bugs nor insects, they ARE “creepy crawlers”, and these cards have proved to be a hit with children. If you decide to use the snail and worm, be sure to explain why they are not bugs or insects. Please know that these two cards are not featured on the Bugs and Insects Measure and Record worksheet.
BUILD A BUG PLAYDOUGH ACTIVITY CARDS (COLOR 10/B&W 10)
Supply students with playdough, googly eyes, foam hearts, acrylic jewels and/or sequins, and cut pieces of straws and pipe cleaners/fuzzy sticks. Students will choose a card and build a bug using the “recipe”. The hearts can be used as wings, and the straws and pipe cleaners as legs and antennae. OR the items may be used any way the children see fit. 🙂
BUGS AND INSECTS NUMBER MATCH UP PUZZLES (COLOR 10/B&W 10)
Cut the cards in half. Young learners will complete the puzzles by matching the quantity of bugs and insects to their corresponding numerals.
LADYBUG NUMBER QUANTITY TASK CARDS (COLOR 10/B&W 10)
Provide students with black vase gems or some other small manipulative. Learners will give the ladybugs their spots by placing a numbered group of items on its corresponding task card. Encourage younger children to use one-to-one correspondence while counting. Older children can use this activity to practice set recognition.
BUG OUT! LETTER SPIN & COVER GAME SHEETS (COLOR 4/B&W 4) AND SPINNER (COLOR 1/B&W 1)
Cut out the spinner card and attach a paperclip spinner with a round head fastener (brad). Provide vase gems, mini erasers, pom poms, or some other small manipulative for students to use as markers. Dot markers may be used for the black and white sheets. Young learners will spin, identify the letter, and cover it on their sheet. Continue until the sheet is completely covered. When using this activity in small group, children will take turns spinning. First player to cover his/her sheet wins. Trade cards and play again!
BUGS AND INSECTS RHYMING TASK CARDS (COLOR 12/B&W 12)
Children will say the name of each picture and find and cover its rhyming partner. Supply plastic bugs, mini erasers or another small manipulative for children to use as markers. Clothespins may also me used.
BUGS IN A JAR SYLLABLE COUNT & CLAP GAME CARDS (COLOR 3/B&W 3) AND SYLLABLE PICTURE CARDS (COLOR 12/B&W 12)
Cut out the jar cards along with the syllable cards. Students will say the picture (bug) name and clap and count each word part. Learners will then place the picture card on the appropriate jar labeled with the amount of syllables. This activity, along with the Critter Clap & Count worksheet (included in this packet), makes for a ton of syllable fun.
BUGS AND INSECTS WRITING TRAY LETTER CARDS (COLOR A-Z/26/B&W A-Z/26)
Provide a shallow tray filled with sand (salt or sugar may also be used) for children to use. Using a small branch or their fingers, learners will practice letter formation using the letter cards as guides.
