I’ve been teaching for many years, and I am always looking for inexpensive, new ways to present learning opportunities to the children. I recently put together this free Feed the Bunnies math game. This colorful teaching tool attracts the children’s attention, and increases number sense (counting, number recognition, etc.).
We will be using this activity as an extension to the story Home For a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown. This book is about a bunny is in search of the perfect home in spring. However, when he meets a family of robins, a frog, and a groundhog, the bunny realizes that not every home he finds will suit him. The bunny eventually comes upon the perfect home and someone to share it with. The beautiful illustrations of Garth Williams bring the story to life.
Spring has sprung, and we are deep into our On the Farm Unit. This week, we’ve been busy graphing our favorite farm animals. The children are learning that graphs are a way to organize information; their favorite animals are the information, and the graph is the organizer. Once the graph was completed, I worked with small groups to evaluate the data. We counted how many students liked each animal, and discussed the concept of more/less/same. Looks like it’s the horse for the win!

In a previous post, we used strawberry baskets for an art project. Well, now we are turning them into a simple, yet powerful math tool. This strawberry activity is a cute way to practice number recognition and counting skills. It is also wonderful for number quantity. The large numbers help the child to understand that numerals represent quantity and that quantity is represented by a numeral. Additionally, the strawberries can be used for set tasks; recognition, matching, separation, and combination.
And let’s not forget about quantity comparison. Children may use the baskets of fruit to make comparisons of weight, size, and amount.
